Hi I am Don Latter, I’ve been an English teacher for the best part of 30 years, teaching in England, Tanzania, Brunei, Australia and Hong Kong. I’ve always been interested in nature and environmental issues, but it was the discovery of Peak Oil about five years ago that galvanised me into trying to help my local community to prepare for what will be a dramatically different world to the one many of us have been used to. I’ve been helping to run a transition group, following the guidelines created by Rob Hopkins’s Transition Movement in the UK. This blog is an attempt to engage in discussion with a wider group of people in Hong Kong on the ways to transition from our current oil dependency to a state of fossil-free local resilience.

    Hello, Don

I stumbled across your blog/website while looking through South Lantau Families. Your most recent posting sounds a lot like the conversation we had recently.

I’ve been trying to phone – but the mobile number I have for you may be old. Can you phone me at 6740-1212? I met a local (Chinese) friend from Pak Ngan Heung who wanted to connect with someone doing organic gardening. I thought I met connect him with you…

I am an organic gardener in the Lam Tsuen Valley in Tai Po. I started 9 years ago with the abandoned terraced rice fields near my house that had in subsequent years been turned into construction dumps……A lot of work and a lot of years later, I grow all my own vegetables and have a great variety of fruit trees as well. There are opportunities for organic gardening plots in my village if folks out there might be interested. The village is mostly Hakka (except me, I’m from California) and we do a lot of seed sharing and admiring of eachother’s gardens (well, I admire theirs, they mostly laugh at my attempts).
